Editors Note: We're blogging through We Didn't Start the Fire by Billy Joel.
‘South Pacific’ was a musical based on a book titled ‘Tales of the South Pacific’ by James A. Michener. The first showing came out in 1949 on Broadway, directed by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, and ran for 1,925 times!
There is an American nurse who is sent to a South Pacific island during World War 2, and she falls in love with French plantation owner, but doesn’t want to accept his mixed-race children. There is also another romance, between an American lieutenant and an Asian woman, but the lieutenant fears the social consequences should he marry his beloved.
The plays stars Ezio Pinza as the plantation owner and Mary Martin (who was also in ‘The Sound of Music’ as the children’s stepmother and ‘Peter Pan’ as Peter) who appeared as the nurse.
I think it would be a very interesting play to watch, and hope to watch it in movie form someday
