Animas Forks

I visited Animas Forks years ago on a family trip to Colorado. I wanted the girls to see a classic Colorado Ghost Town as well.

Animas Forks is a mining ghost town about 12 miles outside of Silverton, CO. It’s part of the “Alpine Loop” - a 65 mile route of some of the most beautiful off-roading in the USA.

Our limitation is our truck is 2WD - but I had it on good account that the road to Animas Forks was bumpy but didn’t require 4WD.

That proved true. Most of the drive is a gravel road. The last 4 miles are more intense - narrow and rocky.

It was slow going, and bouncy in our 3/4 ton truck (especially since I was too lazy to air the tires down). But we never scraped and never lost traction. The only thing I missed about a 4WD truck was a low-range option to slow our descent coming down. I had to ride the brakes more than I prefer.

Equipment aside, it’s a gorgeous drive. Classic Colorado. Road next to a stream with soaring peaks on each side. We lunched, toured the buildings, and made the drive back home.

See the Jeeps? That portion of the road says 4WD required. We didn't go there.

The road looks smooth in all the photos, but it's actually quite bumpy!

    I just caught up on the blog and love seeing these Colorado adventures! As it would turn out, we’re going on a one-year adventure to Colorado Springs for James’s job—keeping the homestead here in Melbourne—just cutting out for a year.

    @tristan: Wow - that’s a head-turn!

    We’ll have to put you touch with our friends in Colorado Springs. They’ll be gone for a few months but there should be some overlap.

    Beautiful pictures ... and I’m salivating at the thoughts of that back country drive!  Time for me to pick up another 4wd vehicle -missing the 4wd Tundra I no longer have.  :-)
