Our rig at a scenic overlook on the Mississippi River
This series is about the drive as much as the the stops.
In that spirit here are some photos from our drive between St. Paul, MN to Winona, MN. This stretch of the Great River Road is part of the “America’s Byways” system.
Most Scenic Drive?
Some of the marketing material said it was voted “most scenic drive in America” - but didn’t quote the source of that vote.
It’s been pretty - but we are still reserving our opinion on the matter. We have some gorgeous drives in this country to measure up against!

A last burst of sunlight right before dark in Winona, MN
We timed our drive of the Great River Road almost perfectly. The fall color continues to astound us. I think it had just peaked in St. Paul where there are still lots of leaves on the trees but the colors had turned more towards golds and browns. As we moved south more reds and oranges started showing again.
Late in the Season
We are right at the end of the tourist season so many RV park options are closed. Other parks are open but with water turned off. The temps are a little colder than we prefer so we’re not able to boondock as much as we want, but we’re making it work.
We have crossed the Mississippi River 27 times.
