Holland State Park

AKA “We Survived Beach Week!!”

When events conspired to take us back to Holland (our hometown) for a few days we thought a change of scenery might be nice - so booked 4 nights at Holland State Park.  The park is split into two, the beach side located right on the shores of Lake Michigan, and the Overflow for everyone lacking the foresight to book in advance as the beach side is popular.

Since we were drop-ins and needed one weekend night we ended up in the overflow.  It wasn’t until I read a sign posting a rule for “No Indoor Furniture Allowed at Campsites” did I realize it was Beach Week, aka “Hey We All Just Graduated High School So Let’s Go Camping Together to Celebrate!”

Yes, it meant for a park overrun with teenagers and everything that entails.  To their credit the Rangers tried to consolidate the teens on one side of the overflow campground, but there was some spillage.

And then we craftily chose a spot that ended up being a cut-through between the main concentration and the spillage.  We eventually just had to stop caring about kids walking through the campsite because even giving big smiles and “Welcome to our campsite!” greetings didn’t clue them in and they were cutting back through 10 minutes later.

Other than having to speak to the neighbor site about some loud music 1/2 hour after quiet time had started it really wasn’t that bad.  The weather was awesome, we got some sun after our time in the rainy woods, took a short family bike ride, and got all of our local tasks accomplished.  The only hiccup was a “Call me about the truck” message from our mechanic.  We had it in to get the transmission serviced and while they were working on it part of their lift failed, two of the support arms kicked in and the truck slipped.  The arms caught on the truck’s rockers, denting them in but preventing the truck from falling all the way down.  At this point the damage looks all cosmetic, all the doors open and close fine, etc.  The shop’s insurance company was in contact the next day and once we’re back in MI we’ll get the damage repaired.

We packed up on a Saturday morning with a niece’s birthday party and a cousin’s wedding reception to get to on our way out of state for a teaching gig.

Next destination - Tennessee!
