Hula Hoops

Editors Note: We're blogging through We Didn't Start the Fire by Billy Joel.

Hula hoops were invented in 1958 by two men named Arthur Melin and Richard Knerr. These two men also helped popularize the frisbee.

Hula hoops were very popular for several months, but then died out quickly. Wham-O, Melin and Knerr’s company, sold at least a hundred million hula hoops during their peak.

Although hula hoops are most often spun around the waist, they can also be spun on the arm, leg, neck, or even the nose!

Some countries banned hula hoops because the shaking of hips was considered indecent.

Fun Fact - While in a park called Houghton Lake, Harrison won a hula-hooping contest!
