Editors Note: We're blogging through We Didn't Start the Fire by Billy Joel.

Wladziu Valentino Liberace was born on May 16, 1919 in Wisconsin. He learned, by ear, to play the piano by the age of four. Liberace’s father tried to discourage his son’s interest in piano, and when he saw he could do nothing, he tried to make Liberace play classic music, but Liberace insisted on playing the modern music of the day.

Liberace is remembered as being glittery, covered with sequins and other frilly things that caught the light. He is also remembered as always having a candelabra (like Lumiere from ‘Beauty and the Beast’) on top of his piano.

After watching/listening to YouTube movies of Liberace, I was amazed at how much sound came out of one piano. He was an amazing performer.
