At one point once our month at Dutch Treat was up we thought about heading up to park by my parents for a while - but the need for staying somewhere new was strong. PJ Hoffmaster State Park shouldn’t be new to us as it’s only 45 minutes up the Lake Michigan shoreline from where we lived for 16 years.
But it’s funny - once you get all packed to go camping somewhere it always feels more adventurous to further away. So we had never camped here, only one odd day-trip that we could recall.
We booked a week, and settled into a shady spot in one corner of the park.
Our time here was….OK. The park is pretty with lots of Lake MI shoreline, a creek running through the park to the big lake, and several miles of hiking trails. But that wasn’t the issue that really prevented us from having a stellar time here. Cold & rainy weather persisted for most of our stay, and all of us are fighting with a pretty nasty cold. Add cold & wet to feeling lousy and then put your house in the dark woods and I think we took more naps here than anything.
We did manage several campfires and a bit of beach time however - enough to salvage the week.
Again we had planned to leave here and head to my parents, but while eating breakfast this morning before prepping to move I broke another tooth. This after just having a crown installed last week. So between that, some remaining errands & appointments, and not wanting to subject my folks to this cold bug we decided to head back to Holland. Rather than going back to Dutch Treat we managed to get a spot in Holland State Park. It’s been years since we camped here - being just 6 miles from our old house. But it’ll be nice for a few nights. And entertaining, as it’s graduation week and the local custom for high schoolers is to follow up Pomp & Circumstance with a little camping and beach time by staying here.
Let’s hope it’s a bit less rowdy than I remember it being 27 years ago…;)
