Roadside American Sunday

Since we arrived in our seasonal spot life has been a flurry of work for the adults and job applications and internships for the kids.

Between the busy schedule and wet spring weather we were feeling a bit of cabin-fever and adventure-angst. We grabbed the chance for a classic Sunday afternoon drive and decided to see what we could do on a budget.

We launched the Roadside America App, dialed up three of the closest oddball attractions, and hit the road.

First up was were the Fish Heads in Newaygo, MI. Harrison demonstrated his fish-wrangling technique while MsBoyink got a kiss.

From there we found the Jack ‘o Lantern Silo in nearby Grant, MI.

Our final in the Attraction three-fer was seeing which way the wind was blowing at the Worlds Largest Weathervane in Montague, MI.

Since we were close to Lake Michigan and had never visited it in this part of the state we followed the shoreline to a small local park on the channel, just across from the White River Light Station.

We celebrated MsBoyink’s birthday a day late with pecan pie served up on the tailgate, took a quick walk out on the pier, and then pointed the nose of the truck back to Fremont.

All in all a nice day afternoon for the cost of a bit of gas and a grocery-store pie.

We were just talking about our visit to Carhenge in Alliance, NE because the weather that day was exactly like what we are currently having here and the landscape was similar.  We played Four Square at Four Corners and saw the Wigwam Hotel in Holbrook, AZ (inspiration for the Cozy Cone Motel in “Cars”).  Cadillac Ranch might not have been worth it, except that we were close enough anyway.  And if you’re in Oregon there is no shortage of Bigfoot statues.  We missed the Spam museum…
