Skyline Drive

Waynesboro, VA is right in between the northern point of the Blue Ridge Parkway (in the George Washington National Forest) and the Skyline Drive (in the Shenandoah National Forest).  Since we had explored just a small part of the BRP, we decided to do the same with the Skyline Drive.  We hoped for a sunset so drove up in late afternoon. The weather today, however was not the clear fall day we had experienced on the Parkway (or Paakway as our Australian GPS voice pronounces it).

Our weather tonight was warm, but windy with great banks of clouds rolling through. We quickly drove high enough to be in the clouds, with the scenic overlooks totally enveloped.  We continued to drive, and found views of partial clouds that allowed sneak peaks of the land under them.

As it got darker, the Drive started feeling quite spooky.  There was little traffic, limited visibility, and you are just surrounded by woods.  Since there are few ons and offs we drove in maybe 10 miles and then turned around to head back home.  About 2-3 miles from the entrance the sun peeked through for a just-in-time sunset.  It felt a bit like we were its only audience - save for the 6 point buck that walked across the road behind us while we watched.

With the clouds still moving through, the sunset changed quickly - I’ve included a few pictures here to give you a sense of it.

Once the sun was done it was back into town for a rare dinner out - we found a local Mexican place and had a great and filling meal.  Miranda liked hers so much she had the leftovers for breakfast…

Beautiful! The shots of the fall colors over the hills with the lake down there remind me a lot of Brockway Mountain in the Keweenaw Peninsula in the UP: http://www.flickr.com/photos/thorstenator/2148032564/
